Family Togetherness

Every summer, Grandmother Anderson invites her family up to her cabin in Pine Forest Park.  In addition to herself, six other family members stay at the cabin:  her son, her daughter-in-law, her two granddaughters, and her two grandsons.  The seven of them (four women named Andrea, Elaine, Helen, and Tara, and three men named Fritz, Jay, and Nicholas) always find plenty of activities to keep them busy during their stay.  Two of the family members enjoy the outdoor activity of biking, while each of the others has a different, favorite outdoor activity (canoeing, fishing, hiking, softball, or swimming).  Each also has a different, favorite indoor activity (canasta, checkers, chess, cooking, darts, drawing, or reading).  Each family member is a different age.  Can you find each Anderson's role in the family, favorite outdoor and indoor activities, and age?

1.  Nicholas enjoys canoeing, the grandmother (who isn't Tara) likes to go hiking, and the 14-year-old male enjoys fishing.

2.  The two who enjoy biking are the son (who is 2 years older than the daughter-in-law) and the 9-year-old.

3.  Andrea's favorite activities don't include hiking or chess, and Fritz's don't include biking.

4.  One of the grandsons enjoys playing darts, and the 4-year-old's favorite activities are drawing and swimming.

5.  The 16-year-old likes to play checkers, the one who likes reading also enjoys softball, and the one who likes to play canasta (who isn't Tara) also enjoys biking.

6.  Neither Helen nor Tara likes to play chess;  Elaine is 4 years old.

7.  The daughter-in-law is 20 years older than the oldest grandchild, and the grandmother is 55 years older than the youngest family member.

Sundae Friday

One Friday a month, the management at Worldwide Industries has a special meeting to recognize employees' anniversaries and birthdays.  At this month's meeting, the employees were surprised with a special treat:  a make-your-own sundae bar!  Six employees (four women named Henrietta, Lorraine, Mandy, and Whitney, and two men named Igor and James) sat at the same table and compared their sundaes.  Each had chosen a different flavor of ice cream (chocolate, coffee, mint, pumpkin, strawberry, or vanilla) and three different toppings.  The eleven toppings that were available included two types of nuts (pecans and walnuts), three types of berries (blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries), and six other different types of toppings (candy pieces, caramel sauce, chocolate sprinkles, fudge sauce, rainbow sprinkles, and whipped cream).  Each topping was chosen either once or twice.  From the information below, can you match each employee (identified by full name) with the flavor of ice cream and three toppings he or she chose?

1.  The person who chose mint ice cream had one type of nuts and two types of berries for his or her toppings.

2.  Henrietta's surname is Lott;  Ms. Sorbet, who didn't pick coffee ice cream, had blueberries on her sundae.

3.  The six employees are the one who ate vanilla ice cream, Igor, the one surnamed Dezirt, the only one who chose fudge sauce, and two who topped their sundaes with rainbow sprinkles.

4.  The only two who picked nuts are the one who had chocolate ice cream and the one surnamed Kold.

5.  James's sundae and the one with strawberry ice cream didn't have any of the same toppings.

6.  Lorraine, who didn't pick coffee ice cream, is the only employee who didn't choose any type of berries.

7.  The one who put both candy pieces and fudge sauce on his or her sundae isn't the one surnamed Cone.

8.  No men picked blackberries; both Mandy and the one surnamed Freeze (who had at least one type of berries) had whipped cream.

9.  The only person who topped his or her sundae with caramel sauce also had blackberries and pecans.

Late-Night Moments

The Nostalgia Network recently aired a special presentation of the funniest moments in late-night television.  Each of the top-six moments involved an interview between a different late-night host (Arsenio, Conan, Dick, Johnny, Steve, or Tom) and a different guest (four men named Iggy, Jim, Payton, and Willy, and two women named Dana and Priscilla).  Each guest, each of whom has a different occupation (one is a movie star), did an unexpected act (one performed a saxophone solo) to make the interview so memorable.  From the clues below, can you determine the order in which each host (identified by full name - one surname is Allen) and his guest placed on the countdown, as well as the guest's occupation and unexpected act?

1.  Arsenio isn't Mr. Cavett, and Johnny isn't Mr. Carson.  Iggy isn't the athlete; the singer is a woman.

2.  The six hosts are Johnny (who had a female guest), Mr. Hall (who interviewed the rock star), the one whose interview with Dana ranked third, the one who interviewed the professional athlete, and the ones who appeared in the first and sixth moments.

3.  Iggy's moment ranked immediately ahead of Willy's;  Willy isn't the professional athlete.

4.  Dick O'Brien hosted a female guest who performed a cheer leading routine.

5.  Conan's moment ranked immediately ahead of Steve's whose moment ranked immediately ahead of Arsenio's;  Arsenio's guest didn't fall of a bike, and neither Conan nor Arsenio interviewed the guest who jumped on the couch.

6.  Jim's moment ranked immediately ahead of the writer's.  Jim wasn't interviewed by Mr. Snyder (whose moment ranked immediately ahead of the one in which a guest flirted with the camera crew).

7.  The guest who fell off a bike (who isn't Payton) didn't appear on Johnny's show.

8.  The moment of a guest kissing a lucky audience member ranked somewhere ahead of that of the politician (who wasn't interviewed by Mr. Carson).

Parent Salads

When six work-at-home parents met at the parent portion of the first day of kindergarten, they realized they had a lot in common.  Each parent (Amanda, Brad, Connie, Mike, Renee, and Wanda) was sending his or her youngest child off to school for the first time.  After the kids were settled, the parents decided to go out to lunch.  At lunch, each ordered a salad with a different type of greens (arugula, butterhead lettuce, crisphead lettuce, mache, romaine lettuce, or watercress) and a different topping (artichokes, broccoli, croutons, mangoes, radishes, or was beans).  While the parents chatted, they discovered that in addition to having a different child in kindergarten, each also has one other older child.  They had so much fun that they decided to meet for lunch every week.  Can you find the full name (three surnames are Ackers, Best, and Wiser) of each parent, the type of greens and topping in his or her salad, and the names of his or her younger child and older child?  Note:  Girls are Abby, Bettina, Melissa, Rachel, and Wilma, and boys are Andy, Ben, Chad, Chris, Matt, Ron, and Wade.

1.  The first initial of each parent's first name, last name, salad green, salad topping, and two children's names are six different letters.

2.  Abby has a younger brother, and Bettina has an older brother;  Wilma has a brother.

3.  Brad ate arugula;  Renee didn't each mangoes.

4.  Exactly four parents have daughters:  the parent of Rachel (who has a younger sibling), Mike, the parent of Matt (who has a younger sibling), and the parent whose salad had both romaine lettuce and artichokes.

5.  The six parents are the one surnamed Mayor, Chad's parent, the parent of Andy (who has a younger sibling), the parent of Ron (who has a younger sibling), and the ones who had salads topped with croutons and wax beans.

6.  Melissa's parent and Brad are surnamed Cleary and Richardson, in some order.

The Beast Within

In the latest issue of Mythological Magazine, the editors rated a new line of five different products (one is a shampoo) designed to find the beast within their users.  Each product was intended for use by a different mythological creature (including a basilisk) and contains a different herbal ingredient (including lovage).  The editors gave each product a rating from one (the worst) through ten (the best), although each product did not necessarily receive a different rating.  At least one product received a rating of one, and at least one product received a rating of ten.  From the following information, can you find the creature for which each product was designed, as well as each product's herbal ingredient and rating?

1.  The product with lavender was rated higher than the one containing lungwort (which isn't meant for a dragon).

2.  The body spray's rating was three lower than the rating given to the product for a griffin, which was three lower than the rating given to the product for a dragon.

3.  The bubble bath isn't for a dragon or unicorn.

4.  At least two products received higher ratings than the product containing lemon balm.

5.  Neither the product for the unicorn nor the one for the griffin is the lotion.

6.  The product for the griffin was given a rating that was three higher than the rating (which wasn't four) that was given to the product that contains licorice (which is for a phoenix).

7.  The bubble bath was given a rating of seven;  the liquid soap wasn't given the highest rating.
